Thinking About Solar?

AFTER MONTHS (OR EVEN YEARS) OF HIGH ELECTRICITY BILLS, IT’S TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE

Solar is a big decision, and we know you have questions. To make your life easier, we’ve put together the top 5 questions our customers ask when considering solar in Illinois:

Does solar really work in Illinois?

While solar panels do not produce as much electricity on cloudy or snowy days, they are very productive during the spring, summer, and fall months in Illinois. Using net metering, solar panels roll over all excess electricity generated during those months to use on days that do not produce as much electricity. Because every kilowatt hour of electricity you generate can be used later, you’ll be covered year-round.

Should I lease or purchase?

That depends on how long you are planning on staying in your current home. If you are not planning to live in your current home for that long, I suggest leasing the system. When you lease solar panels, you are locking in a rate for the next 20 years. Keep in mind that electricity bills are increasing by 4-6% every year. So, not only are you saving 20-25% on your full electricity bill right away, but you’re also future-proofing those savings. When you buy your solar system in Illinois, you are looking at an average return on investment in 8 to 10 years, so if you plan on staying in your home for longer than that, I would suggest purchasing. After that time, your electricity bill will be entirely covered, all you will have to pay is a small fee for meter renting and customer service. Your solar consultant can break down what those costs look like for you.

What are the Illinois tax programs and how do they help me?

Illinois offers incentives such as tax deductions for those who install solar for their homes. The process can be complicated but don’t worry! Our advisors will sit down with you and guide you every step of the way. They will take you through all the details including what the tax incentives are, and a breakdown of how much you would save for your specific home.

What happens if the next homeowner does not want solar?

Most Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z home buyers are looking for renewable energy futures in their next home. This means that around 80% of potential home buyers would find solar attractive in their next home simply because – like you – they are looking to lower their electricity bills. However, there are a few options if you run into a home buyer who does not want it. Your solar consultant can discuss those options and advise you on the right path for you.
